Ideally applications are made to Fall only in the good colleges. You should have your GRE score in hand by 31st August.

Deadlines of many good colleges:

1 Nov - For international applicant for a few top colleges

1 Dec - For most ivy leagues and topmost colleges

15 to 31 Dec - For all remaining good or decent colleges

15 Jan to 15 February - For all remaining average or decent colleges

15 February+ = think of applying next year. Very few options

If you are thinking of admission into a top college or are looking for PhD, you need to communicate with the professors and believe me the entire process takes much time. You need at least minimum 1 month for selecting the universities, based on
your interaction with professors

For many fields MS is not offered by top universities -
only PhD

PHD advantages:

1) Opportunity to do wonderful research and get more exposure without other worries
2) All top colleges offer only PhD
3) Increased chances for admission
4) No fees to pay - study without worries
5) Additional stipend - salary for doing research and teaching
6) In rare circumstances can leave in 2-3 years with an MS (not recommended)

MS disadvantages:
1) Less opportunities to do graduate research
2) No good college offers MS
3) Less chances of funding
4) Little exposure - you will gain nothing except an admit into US
Only advantage of MS - finishes early

Deadlines for giving GRE

If you are giving your GRE after 1 Nov, then you are heading for serious trouble, and ideally you should forget about applying to any top university.
Apply as early as possible. If you start early and
finish your communications with professors in the month of October, finish all your applications by 15 November.
Preparing SOP needs at least 15 days.

Recommendation letters: Professors take time to fill online ones. Don’t waste till last moment.

Transcripts: have many transcripts ready before November

Resume preparation, SOP modification for each individual university is a highly time consuming process. Finish your GRE and get your scores before 1 to 15th October to have time for all these processes if you are applying for a PhD

1) Identify areas of interest - or the specific field your desired future career for example regenerative medicine in biology or
artificial intelligence in CS.
Try to have strong theoretical basis in that. Do strong laboratory or research projects in the field while in college...

2) Win 2 to 3 national level technical paper presentations. Participate in as many as you can in the field of your interest (which you want to pursue your further studies in)

3) 80% is excellent so don’t worry about acads. B.Tech
or BE is more than sufficient to enter a PhD and most of the new PhD admits are bachelors. Have atleast above 65% for eligibility

4) Try to present technical papers at IIT's and communicate with IIT professors and try to do research under them. If you do a
research project at IIT, its 50% as good as passing out from there.

5) If you are able to present any original research
paper at international conference, your paper will be published in
international journals. All universities give most importance to these and your chances are increased by nearly 50%.
Remember GRE score is just one factor and criteria to
evaluate different marking systems. Guys with 1550 scores may be rejected and those with 1200 have been accepted.

No Consultant: for university selections please don’t rely on consultants. In fact there is no need to take a consultant and you can instead spend 14000 rupees on applying to 3-4 more universities which increases your chances.

Please understand that SOP is given more importance than
GRE scores and Acads if you are able to fit in their minimum criteria, and even if you score 1600 with 85% acads, you will be rejected because of a bad SOP.
No consultant can help you, because he is not YOU. He has not graduated in your subject and he does not have the passions that are required to write an SOP for a PhD in your field of interest.

Ideally 2 safe colleges should be decided by consultant
as per his experience, and you should apply to atleast 4-5 other good colleges, acc to interaction with professors and 1-2 dream colleges. Many good colleges have no application fee. Try them out

If you have money apply to 14-15 colleges. 2 safe, 6-7
top, others good

1) Gov registered post - 15 to 30 days - 200 Rs(untraceable)
2) Gov speed post - 10 days - 475 Rs. (can be tracked on internet)
3) Private courier - 4 days - 750 Rs. (can be tracked on internet)

Plan your application accordingly.

ETS provides you a service to send your scores to any 4
universities. You should plan and mark accordingly before giving the tests.

That will save you around 650 x 4 x 2 = 5200 Rs later
for GRE & TOEFL score reporting

For PhD in technical or science backgrounds: No extra
curricular activities are needed except if they have won you awards at University, State or National levels.

Community service is given importance, but try to link
it with your technical issues in your SOP... This is not MBA, and you need to give in facts and figures for your research work or capabilities and talk practical to the point. If you don’t have any research experience, projects or achievements to flaunt, then only you should give fundas.

The Graduate Record Examination, which is abbreviated as GRE, can be defined as a standardized test, which includes the admission requirement for the graduate schools in the United States principally, and some other English speaking countries. The GRE - Graduate Record Examination has been created as well as is being administered by the Educational Testing Service (popular as ETS). This exam primarily focuses on testing the abstract thinking skills of the students. The areas that are covered include vocabulary, math and analytical writing.

GRE Exam

The GRE - Graduate Record Examination is a computer-based exam. The test is conducted by the select qualified testing centers in different parts of the world. However, those places (like Juneau, Alaska etc.) which still lack the proper technological requirements, are allowed paper-based exams.

During the process of graduate school admissions, the emphasis level upon the GRE scores varies between schools. It can also vary between the several departments within the same school. If the GRE score is nothing more than a mere formality in some of the schools, there are many schools where this score is regarded the most important selection factor.

GRE Criticism:

Critics have often argued that the GRE system of admission is too rigid as it only emphasizes on the factor that how well a student fares in a standardized test taking procedure. The ETS responded to this and introduced changes since the November of 2007.

GRE Pattern

  • The GRE - Graduate Record Examination comprises 2 separate tests. These include the General Test and the Subject Test in psychology.
  • The General Test is divided into three parts:
    • Verbal
    • Quantitative
    • Analytical writing
  • The scores of verbal and the quantitative tests each are between 200-800. A scale of 0 - 6 is used to keep the scores of the analytical writing test which are incremented by ½-point. The Subject Test checks the student's knowledge in psychological concepts required for graduate study, which also has a score between 200-800.
  • For admission to graduate school, the scores on the verbal and quantitative sections (excluding the Subject Test), matter the most. For admission to doctoral programs, it is important to score at least 550 on each test.Master's programs are comparatively less competitive, so, scoring between 450-500 on each of the tests can be considered just fine. A score above 450 is expected for entry in any of the colleges.

  • Registration is compulsory for taking the GRE. There are separate testing sites in each state. For the General test, you should register well ahead of time to get your choice of dates for the test. For the Subject Test, you will need to register in an advance of at least six weeks.

  • Online registration can be done. Registration by mail is also another way. You need to fill up the registration form in the GRE Information and Registration Bulletin. The registration bulletin can be obtained from GRE- Online or by writing to: GRE, CN 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000. Master's programs are comparatively less competitive, so, scoring between 450-500 on each of the tests can be considered just fine. A score above 450 is expected for entry in any of the colleges.

  • GRE Preparation

    • To ensure a higher grade in GRE, it is very important to prepare yourself thoroughly.
    • Get hold of review books and plan a systematic method of study, which will help you in brushing your skills in areas of vocabulary, analogies, reading comprehension, geometry and algebra.
    • Cramming is no way to crack a GRE - Graduate Record Examination, all you need is time. It is advisable to start your preparation much before your registration.
    • Planning the General Test in November is a wise decision, which will ensure your scores will be available well on time to meet any deadline during the admissions. Again, if you lose out, on the first trial, you will have sufficient time to re-take the test in December.

Before the marathon begins, the ‘runner’ puts in months, even years, of effort
before he actually runs the race. As the saying goes – get your fundamentals
right. GATE is an exam that tests you on your fundamentals. The questions are
    generally derivations of the fundamentals.
Preparation for GATE is an ongoing
process, and is supposed to happen in stages. First get your fundamentals right,
and then test yourself on those fundamentals. When you have done this, you
should pit yourself with the competition, which means a mock test which would
give you a percentile to let you know where you stand amongst
    competitors.
How do you choose which coaching material to go
with. This is something that is quite subjective. A coaching material cannot be
assessed until you have gone through it. So, you could go by the word of your
seniors as to what coaching material they followed to prepare for GATE.

Here are some parameters on which you can decide
whether you should go for a particular coaching institute, use a particular
    coaching material, or tests:

    1. Uniqueness in their study material: Study
material provided by the coaching institutes is of little assistance if they are
compact copy-paste or rewrite of materials taken from other books. If the
reading of such material doesn’t increase interest and enjoyment then they are
not worth it. There are plenty of standard books on each subject by good
authors, which can make your study enjoyable during preparation.

    2. Collection of quality books in their library:
During the process of theory conceptualization and building application
capabilities, you need good books, which can really put your brain on exercise.
    Check out their library!

    3. Flexibility in the Coaching Model: What
happens when your pace of learning is much faster or slower than the average? Is
there any mechanism by which the model can identify exactly where you need help
and provide the same? Is it possible in that coaching model to minimize the
    wastage of your time?

    4. Quality of questions discussed: Number of
questions discussed is not that important. By discussing and solving 10-15
conceptual questions on each topic you can build a good application capability.
On the other hand solving many tricky non-conceptual questions will simply waste
    your time.

    5. Tests and evaluation model: How is the
progress of your preparation tested and analyzed? To what extent the feedback
helps in identifying the areas for further work? Here I must say that this is
the most crucial part of the preparation. This is the area where most of the
students fail due to lack of proper test materials which can help them to build
in themselves a real-test-like environment and temperament. Once you are able to
choose the correct assistance for your GATE journey, it will be an enjoying and
    thrilling experience.

Here are some things apart from working on your
engineering concepts, that you should do for a complete preparation for
    GATE:

    1. Solve previous years’ GATE papers: Solving
previous years’ papers gives you a fair idea of what the actual paper would be
like. It also brushes up your basics and exposes your ‘areas of
    improvement’.

    2. Solve test papers: Solve as many test papers
as possible. This actually is the best way to keep improving as you prepare for
    GATE.

    3. Analyze : Analyzing your test results is a
very important part of taking the test. If you do not analyze, the test does not
add value. You should minutely analyze and define as to where you could have
scored more; analyze your accuracy rates in various topics and maintain a topic
wise datasheet which lists your performance topic wise for different test
    papers.

    4. Simulate actual test environment : This
is very important. The actual test happens in a classroom, and is timed. When
you take up the test, switch off your cell phone, have a timer which times your
tests, and avoid taking any breaks. Also, if possible, take up a mock test
series which enables you to take the test in a classroom environment.

    POSTGRADUATE ADMISSIONS WITH MHRD SCHOLARSHIP

A candidate is eligible for Ministry of Human Resource
    Development (MHRD) Scholarship/ Assistantship in
    Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy/Sciences at engineering
colleges/institutes in the country if he/she qualifies in GATE . To avail the
scholarship, additionally, the candidate must secure admission to such a
postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting
institution. GATE qualification by itself does not guarantee admission. GATE
qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award
of the Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some government
organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the
    post of a Scientist/Engineer.

As per the directives of the Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, the following procedure is to be adopted for
admission to postgraduate programmes (Master's and Doctoral) with MHRD
Scholarship/Assistantship . The GATE performance of the candidate will be
considered for admission. If the candidate is to be selected through interview
for postgraduate programmes, minimum 70% weightage is to be given to the GATE
performance . The remaining weightage (30% maximum) can be given to the marks
obtained by the candidate in his/her qualifying examination or interview.
Candidates opting for a general paper (XE or XL) should be further examined (by
interview/written test) by the admitting institution. In such cases also the
weightage for GATE score should not be less than 70%. The admitting institution
will prescribe minimum passing percentage of marks in the interview. Some
Colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission
    without MHRD Scholarship/Assistantship.

Candidates are advised to seek details about admission
procedures and availability of MHRD Scholarship/Assistantship from the
department of their interest or postgraduate office of the concerned
institution. GATE offices will not entertain any enquiry about admission and
    award of Scholarship/Assistantship.

While qualifying in GATE is essential for all candidates
seeking admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD
Scholarship/Assistantship, the management of the postgraduate
Scholarship/Assistantship is the responsibility of the admitting institution.
The GATE Committee has no role in the award or disbursement of
Scholarship/Assistantship. Similarly, reservation of seats under different
categories is as per the policies and norms prevailing at the admitting
institution and the Government of India rules.

According to MHRD rules, the award of postgraduate
Scholarship/Assistantship to GATE qualified candidates is for a maximum period
of 24 months for Master's degree programmes in
    Engineering/Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy/Science.

Additional Scorecards (up to a maximum of two) will be issued
only once on request and on payment of Rs 300 per card. Such requests should
reach the Organizing Chairman. These cards will be labelled as Additional
Scorecard -1 and Additional Scorecard - 2 at the top. However, if the candidate
changes his/her admitting institution by using the additional scorecard(s),
he/she is required to clarify the matters related to his/her admission and
Scholarship/Assistantship with the new institution where subsequent admission
    change is sought.

The GATE Score of a candidate is in the range 0 to 1000. It
reflects the performance of a candidate, irrespective of the GATE paper or year
in which he/she has qualified. Candidates with same GATE Score from different
GATE papers and/or years can be considered to have the same performance level.

At present, students in the Integrated Master's Degree and Dual
Degree programmes in Engineering/ Technology are eligible to appear in GATE 2007
in order to qualify for the postgraduate scholarship in their own institutions
only. They are not eligible for admission to a fresh M.E/M.Tech. programme.

      Where GATE Result is used?

Admission to Postgraduate Courses, with MHRD Scholarship / Assistantship, in Engineering / Technology / Architecture / Pharmacy at Colleges / Institutes in the country will be open only to those who qualify through GATE. Some engineering colleges/Institutes specify GATE as mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students.

Who can Benefit from Data on GATE Qualified Candidates

The GATE result is currently seen as one of the bench marks for admission to post-graduate and research programmes by many Universities outside the country as well. The GATE qualified candidates in the Engineering discipline are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Many industries and business houses are using the GATE score as one of the performance indicators for making recruitments. Some industries and universities abroad have shown their interest in obtaining particulars of GATE qualified candidates. The GATE Committee has therefore decided to provide the relevant details of GATE qualified candidates to prospective users. This is a great opportunity for obtaining particulars of the top ranking engineering graduates and science post graduates who have qualified in the National level, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.
